چکیده

Calcific aortic stenosis is the most common valvular disease in the western world, with the prevalence increasing with age. Medical management of critical aortic stenosis is associated with high mortality and cost. While surgical valve replacement is ideal, high early morbidity and mortality limit its usefulness among patients with comorbid illness or advanced age. Balloon aortic valvuloplasty can be an important option that can be used as a bridge to definitive replacement or as palliative therapy. Fewer complications and easier recovery may make balloon aortic valvuloplasty a particularly attractive option for very elderly patients. Reducing the balloon profile reduces complications. A case series using a low-profile balloon with rapid inflation to achieve more effective force on calcified valves resulted in good shortand long-term outcomes. Future studies should seek longer-term data and investigate pathological changes following valvuloplasty.

Background: Balloon valvuloplasty is a relatively new technique for relief of obstruction of aortic valve. The primary results of this procedure are similar to surgical valvotomy with fewer complications and mortality. Materials and methods: One hundred fifty-five patients with congenital aortic stenosis were enrolled in this study over a period of 6 years (1991-1997). Participants were all un...

Balloon aortic valvuloplasty: review of the evidence and current indications

Balloon aortic valvuloplasty was introduced over two decades ago as an alternative to aortic valve replacement in elderly patients deemed unsuitable for surgery. Due to high early restenosis rates and no effect on longterm mortality, the procedure’s development stalled. However, with recent technological advances, in particular the advent of the transcatheter aortic valve implantation, there ha...

Balloon angioplasty for aortic coarctation was introduced in 1979 for the fust time.1 This procedure soon became the choice treatment for restenosis of operated coarctation,2-5 but remains controversial for native (unoperated) coarctation. However, it seems to be rapidly becoming the intervention of choice for relief of unoperated coarctation as well. In this study, we evaluate the outcome ...

Percutaneous balloon aortic valvuloplasty in the era of transcatheter aortic valve implantation: a narrative review

The role of percutaneous balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) in the management of severe symptomatic aortic stenosis has come under the spotlight following the development of the transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) technique. Previous indications for BAV were limited to symptom palliation and as a bridge to definitive therapy for patients undergoing conventional surgical aortic valve ...
